Note from Green Gait Owners – Tree Works on the Green in Flaxton

The large branch that fell from one of the largest black poplars on the Green last year prompted a risk assessment to public safety of all the trees on the Green in the Conservation Area. An arboricultural consultant carried out this survey and followed up with a detailed assessment of three trees, the two ‘veteran’ black poplars and one of the copper beeches. This indicated that the risk to public safety was significant and urgent measures were required on each tree both to reduce risks to the public and to reduce the risk of total loss of the tree and its visual amenity and value for wildlife.

Experienced tree surgeons have been engaged and are scheduled to carry out the required work on 1st and 2nd April. This will involve reducing the height of each tree with large machinery and branches falling, so please do not approach the area whilst the work is being carried out.

The smaller branches will be cleared from the Green by the tree surgeons. The larger branches will be cut to shorter lengths and removed to the hard standing in front of the village hall. These will be available for village residents to use and will be allocated on the basis of the use to which they will be put. Preference will be given in the first instance to uses that maintain biodiversity on or near the Green, second to reuse for recreation, art or other use that maintains them in timber form and finally to use as fuel.

The logs should not be cut further on site and all logs must be cleared by 4th April.

Please contact Steve Axford (01904 463399) or Adrian Lawrence (01904 468472), if you would like to collect any of the logs.

Flaxton Environment Group – Events Programme for 2026

Environment Group Events Programme and Pond Survey

The Flaxton Environment Group is planning several events during this year.  See the attached flyer for dates.  Further information will be circulated for each one nearer the time.

The first of these is a pond survey to record amphibians (frogs, toads and newts) using ponds in Flaxton.  This is a follow up to a previous survey in 1994 and hopefully will be much more extensive than the small survey carried out a couple of years ago.  It will be carried out by the original 1994 surveyor John Spray in conjunction with the York Amphibian and Reptile Group in the evening of 18 April (the easiest way to search for amphibians is with a torch after dark as this is when they are most active).

We would like to survey as many ponds as possible in the survey.  If you have a pond in your garden, field or croft that you would be happy to have included in this survey please email or speak to one of the committee, and someone will be in touch with further information.  Many thanks for your help.
