Introduction
There are twelve names of servicemen who lost their lives during the First World War recorded on the brass plaque inside the Lych Gate at St Lawrence’s Church Flaxton.
In 2018, and in preparation for the 100th anniversary of the ending of the Great War, Elizabeth Kirkpatrick researched the backgrounds to the servicemen who fell. Elizabeth grew up in the village in the 1950’s and also attended the village school. Her mother, Beryl Cartmell, still lives in the village.
We are pleased that Elizabeth has allowed us to reproduce the fruits of her research here on the website. A copy of the materials are also held in the Church.
The materials include an introduction from Elizabeth and a write up on each of the servicemen along with several poignant poems and family photographs.
Other contributions to the website from Elizabeth and Beryl can be found in the Gallery Page – Beryl Cartmell’s Village Pictures.
