    Beryl Cartmell’s Village Pictures

This section shows several pictures kindly provided by Beryl Cartmell’s daughter, Elizabeth Kirkpatrick.

Elizabeth attended Flaxton School in the late 1950s when the School photographs were taken.  Beryl still lives in the village.

Fairview with Martha Robinson and Maud Shaw (Beryl’s Grandmother and Mother)

The Robinson Siblings with Beryl’s Mum behind Fairview. The little girl sitting down is Beryl’s mother Maud.

Beryl and her sister between two cousins outside Westville with Chase Cottage in view.

Beryl by the well at Westville. There was no running water at Westville even by 1951.

Well water was precious and eeked out for drinking and cooking. Other water came from water butts fed by the guttering. No bathroom of course. Outside earth toilet. Tin bath by the fire with water heated on the kitchen range.

Tennis at Flaxton House or The Rectory – Beryl’s mum is front row second from right. Marion Coward, the Village School Teacher around 1917 is also present. Her family ran the Thomsons.
