we have been alerted to a highly believable scam which starts with a text and advises the user that they are eligible to apply for the vaccine and to click on the link in the text message.  The user is then led to a webpage, which looks very convincing and asks them to complete some details, in order for them to be able to apply for the vaccine.

North Yorkshire Police Community Messaging – BLACK FRIDAY & CYBER MONDAY Warning

Dear all

My name is Andy Fox and I am the Financial Abuse Safeguarding Officer attached to the Economic Crime Unit at North Yorkshire Police.

With the country placed into another lockdown I know many of you will be increasing your online shopping in the run up to Christmas. Fraudsters are aware of this and I do expect to see a rise in online fraud over the next couple of months. Black Friday and Cyber Monday are now established retail events which will see North Yorkshire residents spend millions of pounds online.

North Yorkshire Police are hosting an online event in partnership with North Yorkshire Trading Standards which will be your opportunity to learn about the types of online shopping fraud currently operating, how to spot them and how to stay safe.

There will be an opportunity to ask questions to a panel of experts from North Yorkshire Police and North Yorkshire Trading Standards

This online event will be conducted over Microsoft Teams. Do not worry if you do not have Teams installed on your computer. All attendees will be sent a link and you will join the meeting through your web browser. Full details will be circulated to all those attending prior to the event.

This is the second of these types of events I have organised. The first one back in September was well attended and the feedback was very positive.

This online event will take place on Wednesday 25th November 6:30pm – 8:30pm.

If you wish to attend please click on the link below.

I hope you are able to make it

Mystery Shopper Recruitment Scam – A message from North Yorkshire Police

Fraudsters are targeting job-seekers with a recruitment scam that has already claimed a number of victims with losses totalling over £51,000.

The fraudsters use recruitment websites and apps to identify potential targets. The victim is then cold-called by someone claiming to be an employee of a mobile phone network. The caller explains to the victim that they will need to take part in a “mystery shopper” test in order to pass the recruitment process.

The victim is instructed to visit one of the mobile network’s high street stores and take out a phone contract using the victim’s own personal and financial details. They are assured that the contract will be cancelled after the recruitment process is completed.

Once the victim has successfully taken out the contract, they are directed to drop-off points to deliver the phone and SIM card to a ‘colleague’ of the caller. The victim is reassured that the contract will be terminated.

In reality, the victims will never hear from the suspects again, and are left liable for the mobile phone contract they were convinced to purchase. Some victims are also asked to move the “employer’s” money through their own bank accounts, putting them at risk of committing money laundering offences. Others find out that their personal details have been used to take out loans, for which they are also now liable.

What you need to do

  • Personal information such as your full address, DOB, or NI Number should not be included on your CV or public profiles on a recruitment sites.
  • To protect yourself against identity theft, always verify that the employer/recruiter you’re speaking with is who they say they are. Contact the employer via a telephone number or email address on their official website, or via the company’s verified social media accounts.
  • Never allow an employer to move their money through your personal bank account. Legitimate employers won’t ask you to do this.
