**SCAM ALERT ** Message from North Yorkshire Police – HM Courts & Tribunal Service

Please see the note below we have been asked to circulate from North Yorkshire Police

North Yorkshire Police have received many reports of a new scam email in circulation purporting to be from HM Courts & Tribunal Service informing the recipient they have been using their vehicle on a road subject to a charging scheme and have failed to pay the appropriate charge. The recipient is informed there is a £25 fine increasing to £50 if not paid within 14 days and £100 if not paid within 28 days. The recipient is encouraged to click on a link in the email in order to pay the fine. THIS IS A SCAM. There are a number of indicators in the email that it is a scam

  1. The senders email address does not correspond to HM Courts & Tribunal Service
  2. It is not personally addressed
  3. It does not state where your vehicle was seen nor any details of your vehicle
  4. The email encourages you to click on a link to make payment (all this will do is harvest your bank account details)
  5. There is a deadline to act
If you have already responded to the scam and lost money, contact your bank and report the crime to North Yorkshire Police on 101 or alternatively Action Fraud on 0330 123 2040 or online at www.actionfraud.police.uk

Message from North Yorkshire Police regarding Church Office holders

Church office holders targeted by gift card email scam

North Yorkshire Police is warning local residents to be vigilant for an email scam in which the sender claims to be the local reverend and asks the recipient to purchase high value Amazon gift cards on their behalf.

Church wardens, treasurers and volunteers have been targeted, with some emails claiming to be from the Archbishop of York. The initial email follows a standard format and reads:

“Do you have a moment I have a request I need you to handle discreetly. I am currently busy in a prayer session, no calls so just reply my email.”

Then, if the recipient enters into a dialogue they will be asked to purchase Amazon gift cards as ‘thank you’ presents for members of the church family. The scammer provides reassurances that the money will be reimbursed and asks the individual to send photos of the gift cards or vouchers which allows them to collect the unique codes and use the cards to make online purchases.

Individuals who work or volunteer for churches in the Diocese of York have been targeted, with one church office holder purchasing gift cards but thankfully realising this was a scam before it was too late.

Residents are being urged to check the sender email address of any emails appearing to be from a reverend or other church representative and not to make any purchases based on email correspondence received.

Anyone receiving these emails should report it to North Yorkshire Police by calling 101.
