Dear Town and Parish Councils,
We’re emailing to let you know the final details for our celebration of the Queen’s Baton Relay next week.
The Queen’s Baton Relay will pass through Malton on July 13 beginning on Yorkersgate near the War Memorial at 2.08pm.
Eight Batonbearers from Yorkshire and the Humber will pass the baton along the route which goes from Yorksersgate, up Market Place, left onto Newbiggin, cross onto Princess Road and then left onto Old Malton Road.
The Queen’s Baton Relay will finish just before the mini roundabout on Old Malton Road at 2.30pm.
Ryedale District Council has organised a celebratory event in the Market Place throughout the day with stalls from 10am to 5pm.
The White Star Band will perform from 2pm to 3pm and the Kirkham Henry Youth Choir from 4.15pm to 4.30pm.
Everyone Active, which provides leisure services for the council, will be staging fun relay events for children in Malton Market Place from 4.30pm.
The Council is running Commonwealth themed competitions with local schools, businesses and citizens.
A first, second and third prize will be awarded for the best dressed house. Photos of entries should be sent to and prizes include family tickets to Beck Isle Museum, Eden Camp, Woldies Lavender, Rievaulx Abbey and Dalby Forest.
Competition winners will be announced on July 13 in the Milton Rooms from 4pm – 4.15pm.
A Commonwealth-themed treasure hunt has also been staged with businesses around Malton displaying a medal in their window with the name of a sport on it.
Treasure hunt sheets can be downloaded from the Council’s website here and the competition will run until August 8 before prizes are awarded.
On July 13 Malton Market Place and access roads will be closed to cars from 10am to 6pm whilst rolling road closures will be in place along the baton route only during the relay.
