Neighbourhood Watch Update March 2021

Neighbourhood Watch

Several villagers have raised questions about the possibility of re-forming a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme following various reports of suspicious late night activity around Flaxton and neighbouring villages.

At the last council meeting it was felt that Neighbourhood Watch (NW) should be a community-lead initiative as a successful NW scheme requires active involvement of all the community that it serves.

Re-establishment of a Flaxton Neighbourhood Watch Scheme is likely to be a topic for consultation in the development of the Parish Plan, which will also be a community-lead initiative.

In the meantime, a council member has subscribed to receive general updates from the National Scheme and will start to publish them on here and also (in time) on a dedicated web-page on the site.

Attached you will find the March 2021 Newsletter which provides some interesting information about how to spot a growing number range of cyber and telephone scams, news about the March 2021 National Census, and details of a successful NW Scheme in Derbyshire.

North Yorkshire Community Messaging – COVID vaccination scam

Flaxton Parish Council would like to draw your attention to the below message which has been received from North Yorkshire Community Messaging

[North Yorkshire Police Notification System] Member Portal banner

On 27th January 2021 I advised of an email ‘doing the rounds’ which appeared to be from the NHS inviting the recipient to register for a Covid vaccination. This was a ‘phishing’ email which asked you to input your personal details, security information and more importantly your bank and card details. The emailed claimed that your bank details were necessary to verify your identity. North Yorkshire Police have been notified  of a similar email which I have replicated below.

Whereas this is different to the email circulated last week, the intention of the fraudsters is the same; to obtain your personal and bank details.

Please remember the Covid 19 vaccination is free and you will not be asked for payment. The NHS will never ask for your bank details.

If you receive such emails you can forward them to  and then delete from your inbox.

Please pass this message on to friends/family etc

NHS is performing selections for coronavirus vaccination on the basis of family genetics and medical history.

You have been selected to receive a coronavirus vaccination

Use this service to confirm/reject your (COVID-19) Vaccination:

Neighbourhood Watch – Could you become a Community Champion?

neighbourhood watch

As you will no doubt be aware, Flaxton does not currently have an active Neighbourhood Watch Scheme however some residents have expressed an interest in setting one up.

It is a community led function and not a Parish Council one therefore if you feel you have some time to spare and could give something back to the community you are encouraged to follow the link below to see how you could become a Community Champion and what the role involves.

https://www.ourwatch.org.uk/get-involved

The role of Community Champions is so important because it harnesses the skills and motivation of locally connected people, like you, within the community for the sole purpose of raising awareness of crime prevention and improving community wellbeing, which go hand in hand. By taking positive action to reduce the fear of, and the opportunities for, crime to occur, you can play a key part in improving the wellbeing of your community.

Other villages nearby have set these up and a key part of the role will involve networking with them.  You can see these local communities by following the link.

If you think this could be you, contact our Parish Clerk who can forward you the relevant information and put you in touch with the co-ordinator.
