Pond Dipping – Flaxton 2025

Families enjoyed a morning of pond dipping on Bank Holiday Monday 26 May. Wader clad Steve Axford gave a short introduction to pond dipping including its usefulness for assessing pond quality and we then progressed to the village pond to examine the bugs and beasties present. We also examined the ‘newt stone’, hidden at one end of the pond. Afterwards a few enthusiasts transferred to Steve’s garage to look at further samples from other ponds in the village and the Sike stream on the boundary between Flaxton and Strensall Common.

Topics discussed included the lack of water plants in the pond because of excessive shading by trees, and the problems created by invasive non-native plants like the New Zealand pigmyweed which has taken over the pond at the bottom end of the Kell
